She was a simple girl from somewhere in the midwest
Touring Europe rough by train, sampling our Octoberfest
An American by birth, thus quite self-impressed
Until she spilt a pint of Timisoara on me, in Budapest
We giggled as we both rushed in with serviette’s
We hopped a train together then, at my ardent behest
We fell in lust, sampled our first kiss over the shared armrest
As the train carried us into the night, and on to Budapest
When we parted, she handed me a viszlát* bequest
A notebook, filled with poetry, a single Violet- in its pages, pressed
This 100 word creation is my contribution to both Friday Fictioneers and the Wea’ve Written Weekly poetry challenge. This form is called a ghazal.
The overall Train theme was by the suggestion of The Procrastinators.
*Good-bye in Hungarian
Maybe it’s a unique keepsake for you. Good luck and have a nice day, my love. 💋💞

Thank you so much. As I commented earlier, I dreamed in my youth of getting a Eurail pass and doing just this traveling rough through Europe. I guess this was my opportunity to experience it.

Thank you so much. Eurail passes were a thing when I was a teen, and since I never had the opportunity to go in person, I thought, why not create the next best thing.

This is beautifully written, Violet. Perhaps your best. It evokes such a feeling that is captured in English only by the inadequate word, wistfulness. But in Portuguese, it evokes saudade

This is dreamy, Violet. I always wished to ride the Orient Express from Paris to Istanbul, visiting all points along the way. I’ll do so vicariously through your ghazal, a form I have yet to write.

Thanks, Kymber. I’ve left a man with a book with a personal note inscribed in the cover, the lyrics to Hello It’s Me another time and countless letters filled with poetry so this wasn’t a real reach for me.

Some of the best memories are made on the road with someone you lust or finding someone to lust while you’re out there.. Of course, in my day, that meant with a knapsack and your thumb out, but I guess something similar could be achieved today if you were so inclined.

I used to be so brave taking the bus into the city… a teenager. Now I wouldn’t ride the subway alone if someone paid me… But then now I don’t even drive at night if I don’t have to.
Memories are important for inspiration. Little seeds of joy that sprout on the page.

Wonderful journey … and congratulations on POW. Your poem took me on a reminiscing journey as I did meet someone on a train once, that we got off at the same stop and went for a drink… never happened before or since … also the use of flower pressing, I have many sentimental flowers pressed into some old books …. Really lovely take 💞Suzanne
