The Incident

“I cannot say I know exactly what he was up to. All I do know for sure, is that what had happened to him at that moment was what happens to people when they are unexpectedly caught in something very shameful. His eyes! Why, they were open a mile wide!”

“So then, you did see his face? Clearly enough so you could identify him? As of the moment we don’t really know that a crime has been committed, but if it comes to light one has, your being able to identify him would be of great help to the department.”

“Oh, he was up to no good. If he wasn’t, he wouldn’t have slipped away the way he did. Behind the bushes I mean, instead of taking the walk. Well that is until the bushes ended and he was forced out onto the green, just there at the bell tower.”

“Well Miss, my partner and I have made a preliminary search of the area, and nothing has been found that would cause us to believe he was involved in criminal activity. That is to say no victim, no stolen merchandise lying about, no signs of a struggle of any kind.”

“Must I come out and say it? The man was diddling with himself just as surely as I am standing here! What visible signs of that, might you and your partner hope to find? I mean outside of a couple of sticky leaves, or a wet spot amongst the weeds.”

This was written utilizing both the photo prompt and the line, “What had happened to him at that moment was what happens to people when they are unexpectedly caught in something very shameful.”– from ‘Anna Karenina’ by Leo Tolstoy as provided by Kristian on 50 word Thursday, Misky’s twiglet, “a mile wide” and Michael’s Tale Weaver prompt word of the week, Weeds.
